A beautiful sunrise. The play of light on the ocean. The face of a loved one. These are sights that can bring any of us a sense of peace, joy, and satisfaction. Our eyes are central to our happiness, yet we often don`t think about our vision health until we have some problem. We`re much more likely to take an action because it`s good for our hearts, our skin, or our figure than we are to do something healthy for our eyes. Think back to the last time you heard someone say, "Yes, I`m doing that because it`s good for my eyes." You probably can`t come up with an example at all. Fortunately, there are many things we can do for the good health of our eyes that are also good for our health overall, and vice versa. Look at the things that have been proven good for your vision health:

  • Regular exercise. Turns out that regular walking, cycling, and other activities that get the blood pumping are also good for vision health.
  • Eating your greens. Just like your mum said. In fact, not only dark green vegetables like kale are good for your eye health, but omega-3 fatty acids are as well, so have some salmon or halibut with your spinach for good measure. These super foods reduce your risk of macular degeneration and keep your vision sharper longer.
  • No smoking. If you don`t smoke, don`t start. If you do smoke, quit. Your eyes will thank you, probably because smoking interferes with proper circulation and keeps your eyes from getting the oxygen and nutrients they need. This is an issue for eyes especially because they have no direct source as other body parts do.
  • Wash your hands. It lessens your chance of catching the flu or getting food poisoning, and it also keeps you from having eye infections. This is particularly important for those who wear contact lenses.
  • Remember sun protection. When you use sunscreen for your skin, let it be a reminder to wear sun glasses to limit sun damage to your eyes.
  • Get some rest. Our bodies need sleep. So do our eyes. Your eyes will also be happier if you look away from your computer screen every 20 minutes and refocus.
  • See your doctor. Some eye diseases have no symptoms until they begin to affect your vision, and you may not notice right away. Use an online eye test to keep up with any changes that might signal a concern, and see your optician for a regular eye exam.

Good health, and good visual health, is a wise investment.
